If you are a woman past menopause who experiences moderately intense hot flushes and/or night sweats, you are invited to participate in a study. This study is being conducted by Dr Jerilynn Prior, Professor of Endocrinology, and Dr Christine Hitchcock at the University of British Columbia.
This 4-month study is designed to determine whether Raloxifene (Evista®) or Progesterone (Prometrium®) help blood flow (which is related to the risk for a heart attack). We also want to see whether Raloxifene changes hot flushes/night sweats either alone or with Progesterone. We will monitor experiences related to quality of life as well as several risk factors for heart disease. Women with no prior risk factors for heart disease (high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, overweight, high cholesterol), who have not had a period for between 2 and 10 years may participate if they experience moderately intense hot flushes.
As a participant, you will receive information about your personal risk of heart disease, and will contribute to medical knowledge about the effects of Raloxifene and Progesterone on hot flushes and heart disease risk factors. This knowledge will help other women and their doctors to choose among menopausal therapies. For further information, please contact Dr. Christine Hitchcock at 604-875-5917.
