Volume 4, Number 2: Summer Solstice, 2002

From the Editor - BC Diabetes Foundation

Dr. Eric Norman PHD

Welcome to another issue of the Quarterly Newsletter. We are gearing up for our third annual health symposium this fall and the theme is diabetes. You’ll find more information in the adjacent ad as well as on our website. The symposium is free and open to the general public. Please note that this year we have moved location and will be having our symposium at the central branch of the Vancouver Public Library. We have also changed the starting time to a leisurely 1 pm for all the late-risers. Hope to see you there.

I’ve chosen to discuss a much neglected and often poorly understood topic, that being exercise and type 1 diabetes. It is often not appreciated that people with type 1 diabetes are able to perform on an equal footing with non-diabetic peers, whether it’s light recreation or world-class athletics. It does require, however, a basic understanding of the body’s metabolism in general as well as how your own body functions in terms of energy needs and changing blood sugars and adjusting insulin doses. These are all critical to being able to safely enjoy any type of exercise.

Please share this issue of our newsletter with a friend and take care.
