Volume 2, Number 1: Spring Equinox, 2000

From the Editor - BC Diabetes Foundation

Dr. Eric Norman PHD

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to another issue of the Quarterly Newsletter. The Foundation has another year under its belt and one full annual cycle of newsletters to keep track of the passing seasons. A slightly updated look with different paper and colours brings to mind the need for progress as the Foundation evolves.

Dr. Elliott, president of the BC Endocrine Research Foundation, highlights some of last years activities in his message and we look forward to expanding our programs in education and research.

Dr. Grady Meneilly starts things off with an excellent overview of our understanding of diabetes in the elderly. Dr. Meneilly specializes in this area in his research and shares his insights regarding differences in the ways diabetes can present itself and the unique approaches to dealing with the varying presentations of this disease.

I have taken this opportunity to discuss the fundamentals of cholesterol as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Many of us have had our cholesterol checked but leave it up to our physicians to interpret these results. After reading this article you should have some questions for your general physician, questions for your parents regarding family history and answers for yourself.

Dr. Jerlilynn Prior and Frances Kirson have started a new research project that will investigate osteoporosis in young women. While many consider osteoporosis to be an old women’s disease a very high percentage of women under 50 have poor bone health. The project aims to fill gaps in information in this area as well as generate educational materials.

I feel there is always promise in any new season and especially as we’ve entered a new millennium. I hope this newsletter finds you open to sharing information and maximizing the opportunities we all have to take better care of ourselves and the ones we love.
