Dr. Breay Paty will provide an update on the groundbreaking Islet Cell Transplantation program from the University of Alberta. This transplant program allows people with diabetes to live insulin free. A similar program is now being initiated at Vancouver Hospital.

BC Children Hospital’s Dr. Jean-Pierre Chanoine will talk about Childhood Obesity, which is reaching epidemic proportions in North America. Diseases such as type 2 diabetes, typically associated with adults, are now arising in children as a result of obesity.

Registered nurse Lynn West will discuss the Nuu chah nulth Diabetes Initiative, a successful model for addressing the high rate of diabetes and it’s complications among Aboriginal people. The program develops harmonious, trusting and cooperative relationships among health care team members, individuals with diabetes, their families and service providers involved in care.

The host of the Diabetes Symposium will be Joyce Resin, host of Prime TV’s Alive program. The new BC Endocrine Research Foundation video, Live Well With Diabetes, will also be previewed. Directed by Fred Cawsey, this informative video is aimed at educating people with diabetes and their families about the diagnosis, treatment and long-term complications associated with diabetes.
